How to play Für Elise

  1. Beethoven marked it Poco moto, so take the theme at a relaxed, flowing pace rather than the rushed speed it often gets.
  2. For the E and D-sharp alternation, use two neighboring fingers and let the hand rock gently between them.
  3. In the D-minor episode, keep the left hand's repeated low notes light and close to the keys so they stay even under the chords.
  4. Practice the arpeggio and chromatic run that return to the theme on their own, slowly, since that is where hands most often fall out of time.

Structure

The original is a rondo in 3/8: the A-minor theme returns between two contrasting episodes. The first turns to F major and C major, with a gentle melody that dissolves into quick runs. The second, in D minor, sets agitated right-hand chords over a low repeated A, then a rising arpeggio and falling chromatic scale lead back to the theme. It takes about three minutes.

About Für Elise

Beethoven wrote this short bagatelle around 1810, but it first appeared in print in 1867, forty years after his death, from a manuscript since lost. No one knows for certain who "Elise" was; some scholars think the name was misread from "Therese" in his handwriting. An album piece he never published became one of the most played piano works in the world.

Why the first passage is level 3

That passage is level 3 rather than 2 because it needs both hands at once.

Für Elise lives on the alternation of E and D-sharp, so the first thing to read is the accidental, not the note. The A-minor sections pass a broken-chord figure from the left hand to the right, and reading it well means seeing each group of three as one chord shape. The middle episodes change texture completely, which is where most players lose their place.
