How to play Sonatina in C Major, Op. 36 No. 1

  1. Play the first movement at a moderate, cheerful Allegro with clear, crisp articulation; the slow movement should sing, and the finale should feel light and bouncy rather than rushed.
  2. The left hand in the first movement is mostly simple chord shapes and broken chords; keep it quieter than the right hand so the scales and arpeggios on top stay in front.
  3. The fast scale runs are the usual trouble spot; practice the thumb crossings in short groups and raise the tempo once each is smooth.
  4. Notice that the second theme returns in C major in the recapitulation; practice the two versions back to back so your hands learn the difference instead of drifting into G.

Structure

The first movement is a miniature sonata form: a main theme in C major, a second idea in G major, a short development, and a return of both themes in the home key. The middle movement is a gentle Andante in F major in three-four time, and the finale is a quick, playful Vivace back in C major. All three movements together take only about four minutes.

About Sonatina in C Major, Op. 36 No. 1

Muzio Clementi, an Italian-born pianist, publisher, and piano maker who built his career in London, wrote the six sonatinas of Op. 36 as teaching pieces, published in the late 1790s. They lead step by step toward the full Classical sonata, and the first, in C major, has been an early milestone for piano students ever since.

Why the first passage is level 5

That passage is level 5 rather than 4 because it leaps a octave.

Clementi's first sonatina in C major is the starting point of the classic sonatina books. The first movement opens with a broken C-major chord and then answers with scales, so it rewards reading shapes: chords, scales, and repeated left-hand patterns. Its three short movements each have a clearly different character.
