Preparing your passage…
Christian Petzold, German baroque (1677–1733). The reading release has 32 passages from this piece at levels 2–8; the reader above opens on the easiest, bars 11–14 for the left hand alone.
The hardest stretch is bars 15–26 at level 8.
Learn it the way teachers do: each hand on its own, then together, then the hard bars. Each step is a real graded passage of Minuet in G Major, BWV Anh. 114.
The minuet is in binary form, two halves of equal length, each repeated. The first half presents the opening tune in G major and its graceful answer. The second half starts with fresh material, moves through neighboring keys, and returns to G major for the final cadence. With repeats it takes about a minute and a half.
Christian Petzold was a respected Dresden organist and composer, and this minuet comes from one of his harpsichord suites. It was copied into Anna Magdalena Bach's 1725 notebook, which is why it carried Bach's name for so long. Its melody reached pop audiences as the 1965 hit A Lover's Concerto.
That passage is level 2 rather than 1 because notes come faster than one per beat, it leaps a major third, it is in 3/4, not 4/4, it has dotted rhythms, it moves in eighth notes.
This is the famous “Bach minuet” from the Anna Magdalena notebook, now attributed to Christian Petzold. The right hand climbs by step and then leaps back, and the left hand answers in its own melodic line rather than chords, so it is an early exercise in reading two independent voices. Its one sharp, F-sharp, is the only accidental to keep in mind for most of the piece.
The reading release grades 27 distinct passages of this piece. Open any of them in the reader:
