Sight Reading Generator

This sight reading generator gives you a new passage every time you press Next. It does not invent random notes: each passage is a few bars of a real piano piece, picked at the level you set. It opens at level 2.

The settings

Everything is in the reader's menu, and it remembers your choices:

  1. Set the level. Easier and Harder move one level; the menu jumps straight to any level from 1 to 10.
  2. Set the passage length. Short is up to 4 bars, medium 5–8, long 9 or more.
  3. Pick a reading mode. Wait for me holds each note until you play it. In tempo keeps a pulse, and needs a piano connected over MIDI.
  4. Read, then press Next. Play the passage once, read your score, and press Next for a passage you have not just read.

Watch one first, in the same menu, plays the passage for you before you try it.

Generated notes or real passages?

Most sight reading generators build each exercise from rules: a key, a range, a set of rhythms, then random notes inside them. That gives endless material, but none of it sounds like music, and none of it repeats the shapes you will meet in real pieces. This one draws from Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and more instead, with every passage scored for how hard it is to read cold and placed on one of ten levels. You still get a fresh passage every time; it just comes from a real score.

How much to read

Five to ten new passages a day, at a level where most come out at 90% or better. Reading should feel a little too easy: the skill you are training is keeping going. If you do not know your level, the sight reading test finds it in a few passages, and exercises by level shows what each one asks of you.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no account and no download. Play on the on-screen keys, a MIDI piano, or into the microphone.

Why real music instead of random notes?

Random notes have no shape to recognise. Real passages repeat the patterns composers write, such as scales, broken chords, sequences and cadences, and recognising those patterns is what makes reading fast.
