How to play Minuet in F Major, K. 2

  1. Play at a steady, moderate minuet tempo, and lean slightly on the first beat of each bar to bring out the graceful three-beat swing.
  2. Set the right hand around F with the thumb on F, so that the B-flat falls naturally under the fourth finger, and the frequent B-flats will feel automatic instead of a stretch.
  3. Let the last note of each little phrase be softer and slightly shorter, so the phrases sound like a question and answer instead of one long line.
  4. Practice the left hand alone first, noticing how its bass notes outline the harmony, then add the right hand slowly and keep counting 'one, two, three' aloud.

Structure

It is a miniature in binary form: two short halves, each repeated. The first half sets out the melody in F major and moves toward the dominant, C major, and the second half brings the melody back to F major for the final cadence. The entire piece takes well under a minute to play.

About Minuet in F Major, K. 2

This minuet is among the earliest pieces Mozart composed, written in Salzburg in early 1762, around his sixth birthday. His father, Leopold, wrote these early works down in the music notebook he kept for Mozart's older sister, Nannerl, which is how the minuet survived. It offers a glimpse of the child before his travels as a prodigy and is often taught to beginning pianists.

Why the first passage is level 3

That passage is level 3 rather than 2 because a hand covers more than one position, it leaps a fifth, the line roams across the staff, it leaves the five-finger position.

Mozart wrote this minuet as a young child, and it is one of the cleanest introductions to reading in three. The melody moves in short phrases that answer each other, and the left hand mostly holds simple bass notes. Watch the B-flat in the key signature, which appears in nearly every bar.
