How to play Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je, Maman”, K. 265

  1. Treat each variation as its own short study, and set its tempo by its hardest passage rather than by the simple theme.
  2. When the left hand has the running notes, keep it lighter than the right so the melody stays on top.
  3. In the triplet variations, count three even notes per beat and don't let them slide into sixteenths; saying 'one-trip-let' aloud helps.
  4. Most runs stay in C major, so use standard C-major scale fingering, passing the thumb under after the third finger.

Structure

The theme is a short rounded binary form: an opening phrase, a contrasting middle phrase, and a return of the opening, each half repeated. Every variation keeps that layout and harmony. Running sixteenths go first to the right hand, then the left, followed by triplets in each hand in turn. Variation 8 turns to C minor, Variation 11 is a slow Adagio, and Variation 12 is a quick 3/4 with a coda.

About Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je, Maman”, K. 265

Mozart composed these variations in the early 1780s, most likely in Vienna, and they were published in 1785. The theme was a popular French song of the day; the same melody also carries the alphabet song. Variations on a familiar tune were a common teaching and performing form, and this set remains a staple for intermediate pianists.

Why the first passage is level 6

That passage is level 6 rather than 5 because it runs fast figuration.

Mozart took the French song we know as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and wrote twelve variations on it. The theme itself is easy to read; each variation then decorates it with runs, triplets, or a busy left hand, so the tune is always hiding inside the figuration. Find the tune note on each beat and the rest falls into place.
